OC192 Bandwidth Service Providers For Core Telecom Networks

As technologies evolve, better applications and computers are introduced. These have better processing power and hog a lot more bandwidth. With increasing computer penetration in enterprises and residential, there is a huge strain on the core network transport capacity. SONET technology introduced many interesting and useful features into telecom network connectivity. The two of the most important ones are the scalability and reliability. The scalability can be appreciated by looking at the various hierarchy within the SONET networks. Some of the original transmission links at the core were around OC3 and OC12 links. These links today are used primarily to connect remote locations with the core networks. The core is now handled by Optical Carrier level 192 links of 10 Gbps.

An important aspect about the Optical Carrier level 192 links is the compatibility with other technologies. Many of the emerging network transport technologies are being designed to be compatible with the optical carrier 192. A popular solution of this type is the WAN-PHY which is a form of 10 Gigabit Ethernet. This variant extends the traditional LAN solution: the Ethernet, into WAN domain.

Another variant of the same is the LAN-PHY, but this does not readily work with SONET in its native form. Besides these newer solutions, there are many purely SONET networks networks deployed in the world. Invariably in almost all of them, Optical Carrier level 192 remains the most preferred backbone solution. The core networks use these links to transfer high volume traffic between large central offices.

Besides the scalability and compatibility, the reliability of SONET makes it a very popular technology. SONET uses the concept of protection rings. The idea is that if one leg of the ring fails, the rest can take over the traffic and ensure high link availability. This is particularly vital for an OC192 because, if this link goes down thousands of customers could be affected.

In summary, OC192 link has all the ingredients to make it an ideal transmission solution for core networks. It has the right capacity to support high speed connections required at the core. It also has all the standard SONET features adding a high level of reliability.
